Phil

I’ve been baking since 2011, when what started as a simple hobby gradually became something much more.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of creating cakes for birthdays, weddings and special occasions, and I still love seeing someone’s idea come to life.

I’m a nurse by background, so care, patience and attention to detail come naturally to me. I bring that same approach to everything I bake — from celebration cakes to brownies.

These days there’s a new challenge too: teaching Michael everything I’ve learned over the years. He’s doing rather well, although I’m not quite ready to hand over the piping bag completely just yet! 😂

Michael

I’m Michael, the other half of Gretna Baker Boys — and very much the apprentice in the kitchen.

I’m also a nurse by background, so caring for people and paying attention to the little details has always been a big part of who I am.

Phil has been baking since 2011 and has spent years perfecting his craft, so I’m lucky to be learning from him. I’m gradually building my confidence, learning new techniques and discovering just how much work goes into making something look effortless.

I really enjoy being part of creating something that makes people happy, whether that’s a box of brownies, a celebration cake or something made for a really special occasion.

I may still be the trainee for now, but every bake is another lesson — and apparently Phil thinks I’m getting good enough to be trusted on my own occasionally!

How it all began

Our Story

This photo takes us right back to 2016, when we got married at Gretna Registry Office before celebrating with our family and friends at The Gables Hotel in Gretna.

Gretna has always held a special place in our hearts, so it feels rather fitting that all these years later it has become home to both us and Gretna Baker Boys.

One of the things that made our wedding particularly special was that we made our own wedding cake. Phil had already been baking for several years by then, while Michael was mainly there for moral support, quality control and, of course, the tasting!

Since then, Phil has continued developing his baking skills and creating cakes for birthdays, weddings and special occasions. Now, through Gretna Baker Boys, he’s passing those years of experience on to Michael.

Having celebrated our own wedding here in Gretna, we know how much the little details matter when you’re celebrating something special. Being trusted to make something for someone else’s occasion is something we never take for granted.

From getting married in Gretna to building Gretna Baker Boys here years later, it really does feel like we’ve come full circle. ❤️
